Huggett made a solid par on the first extra hole, the 18th, while Polland missed the green right, chipped on but agonisingly watched his nine foot putt slip past the hole.
It was the second sudden-death defeat Huggett had inflicted on Polland in a week. Last Sunday Huggett birdied the play-off hole at Wentworth to win the Schroder Senior Masters.
Huggett, a former Ryder Cup player, winner of over 30 tournaments worldwide, said: "This is definitely number one in my career. At 61 you don't expect to hold anything like this trophy. I feel for Eddie who is a tremendous player and after beating him twice he probably doesn't like me too much.
"I nearly threw it away at the 16th and in the end was lucky to be in the play-off. To win is wonderful."
Polland birdied the 16th and 17th to draw level with Huggett who had dropped three shots in the space of four holes from the 13th. In the end Huggett had to hole a tricky four foot putt to tie with Polland.
Huggett's name appeared to be engraved on the trophy from the moment he holed a pitch from 120 yards at the first hole. Having pulled his tee-shot into the left rough, he hacked his ball out into the right rough and then calmly holed the pitch.
He birdied the second, dropped a shot at the third and then rolled in another two birdies at the fourth and fifth to draw level with overnight leader Tommy Horton for the first time. When Horton dropped a shot at the seventh Huggett picked up the first par of his round and moved into the lead for the first time.
Horton came back with a birdie at the eighth but again Huggett edged in front with a birdie at the ninth for an outward half of 33, three under par. Both the leaders birdied the par five tenth but then dropped two shots over the next five holes.
Horton's challenge effectively ended on the 16th when he drove into a bunker, reached the green in three and then three putted for a double bogey six.
Brian Barnes, who started the day two shots behind Horton dropped three shots in the first seven holes to slip down the field, but over the closing stretch birdied the 15th and 17th to move within a shot of the leaders. His 20 foot putt to tie just slipped past the hole.
