Five in Focus: Scottish Senior Open

As we celebrate the 26thyear of the Scottish Senior Open – the longest running event on the Staysure Tour – here are five golfers to keep an eye on this week as we head to Craigielaw Golf Club…

Gary Orr

Gary Orr

The Scotsman has firmly found his feet on the Staysure Tour in his first two seasons on the European over-50s circuit. Orr finished 15thon the Order of Merit last year, playing just 10 events, and recorded a runner-up finish and a third place finish during his first year back on Tour.

He has four top tens already this season, including, for the second year running, a runner-up result at the Willow Senior Golf Classic, a tied fifth finish at the Sharjah Senior Golf Masters presented by Shurooq and back-to-back tied eighth and tied tenth results at the Swiss Seniors Open and WINSTONgolf Senior Open.

Roger Chapman

Roger Chapman

The double Senior Major winner has made a superb recovery from shoulder surgery which forced him out of action for the first three months of the season. Chapman made his return on the Old Course at The Senior Open Presented by Rolex, making the cut and finishing T48, and then finished in a share of 26thplace at the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship.

He recorded his best result since last September at the Willow Senior Golf Classic, finishing tied for fourth on nine under par, just three strokes behind Peter Fowler. With six events still to play in 2018, expect Chapman to surge up the season-long Rankings over the coming weeks.

Barry Lane

Barry Lane

A two-time winner of the Scottish Senior Open, Barry Lane has shown no signs of slowing down in 2018. Already this season he has a runner-up result and a tied sixth finish to his name and currently occupies 17thplace on the Order of Merit.

Lane holds the record for the lowest-ever round on the Staysure Tour, a 12 under par round of 60, which he set just last year at the Willow Senior Golf Classic.

His first European Tour victory came at the Bell’s Scottish Open in 1988, and he won the Cleveland Golf / Srixon Scottish Senior Open in his first year on the over-50s circuit in 2010, which he successfully defended the following year.

Peter Fowler

Peter Fowler

Having secured his first win in more than three years at last month’s Willow Senior Golf Classic, Fowler has reacquired his taste for victory.

One of the most consistent players on the Staysure Tour, earning a top ten finish in nearly 50 per cent of his appearances, the Australian finished as the Tour’s Number One player in 2011, winning the John Jacobs Trophy for topping the Order of Merit.

In 13 eventsso far this year, he has finished first as well as tied for second, third, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth. His runner-up finish came in Sharjah at the start of the year, where he was defeated by Thaworn Wiratchant in a three-man play-off with last year’s Number One Clark Dennis.

Magnus P Atlevi after winning the European Tour Properties Senior Classic

Magnus P Atlevi

After returning to the winner’s circle at last week’s European Tour Properties Senior Classic, Magnus P Atlevi showed once again that he can never be written off.

The Swede, Rookie of the Year in 2016 after finishing second on the Order of Merit, secured his first title since that magnificent season by finishing three strokes ahead of Welshman Stephen Dodd at Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort.

Atlevi has three further top ten finishes this season, including a runner-up result at the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship in August, where he finished just two strokes behind Phil Golding.
