American Bob Lendzion, a new face on the Seniors scene , won the £150,000 Beko Classic in a three-man sudden death play off at the Gloria Resort course in Antalya, Turkey.

A final round of 69 had enabled him to tie that battle-hardened pair, Spain’s Antonio Garrido and South Africa’s Bobby Verwey, winner of the 1991 Senior British Open championship, on 211, five under par, after 54 holes.

Out to the par four 18th, where all three players drove safely into the fairway. Verwey hit his approach to 15 feet, Lendzion hit a beauty to four feet and Garrido found a greenside bunker.

Garrido got up and down, Verwey’s birdie putt stayed on the lip and the stage was set for Lendzion’s triumph. He made no mistake. "I’d been holing putts of that distance all week so I just knew I was going to win. There was a smile on my face the moment I hit the putt.

"It was a great thrill for me to beat a beautiful swinger of the club like Antonio Garrido and then a player with all Bobby’s experience."

Lendzion, who won his Tour card at the Qualifying School last year, is a golfing globetrotter in every sense of the word. When his home club in Nevada closes because of severe winters, he picks up his clubs and tours the world.

He has competed in places like South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, South America and the various US mini-tours. His career victories include the US National Club Professionals Championship in 1986 and the Chile Open in 1992.

"But I’ve never played in Europe before and I’m looking forward to competing against a great bunch of guys," said Lendzion, who had given due warning of his class by tying for third place in the El Bosque Open the previous week.

At the start of the last round, Australian Geoff Parslow was the leader by two but he came to grief at the 14th when the brutal rough cost him a triple bogey seven.

By then there was a whole posse in hot pursuit, none more so than the defending champion, Tommy Horton. After an indifferent second round of 75, he predicted that he would need a 66 or a 67 to have any chance of victory and when he romped to the turn in31 - three birdies and an eagle - all the players at the top of the leaderboard were starting to perspire. But Horton’s putter went sour on him and he finished with a 68 for a 213, and a share of fourth place. Horton, dogged all week by an upset stomach and blurred vision, said: "I gave it my best shot but I was a little too late."

John Garner threatened, too, with a flurry of birdies, closed with a 68 to tie Horton and said: "I’m still a bit rusty but all in all I’m delighted with my week."
