In-form Spaniard Miguel Angel Martin moved into a share of the lead midway through the second round at the English Senior Open at Rockliffe Hall.
Martin, who has finished in the top ten five times in his last six appearances on the European Senior Tour, began the day four shots off the lead of overnight leader Peter Mitchell but three consecutive birdies from the second hole saw the 51 year old Madrid man come flying out of the blocks.
Further gains at the long seventh and par four ninth saw Martin complete a blistering front nine of just 31 blows to move top on seven under par alongside compatriot Santiago Luna, who was two under par as the day progressed.
Another Spaniard, Jose Manuel Carriles, was one shot back alongside the English pair of Philip Golding and Paul Eales, who were also going well in County Durham on Saturday as both reached four under par for the day with Dane Steen Tinning.
England’s David J Russell was one under par for the day, two shots off the lead, after mixing two birdies with a bogey, while first round leader Mitchell slipped to three back following a double bogey at the short sixth hole.
There were more good crowds on Saturday as Rockliffe Hall was bathed in glorious autumn sunshine.
