The tented village at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters has been abuzz this week with the sound of balls clipped crisply away into eagerly awaiting nets.
This is not as the result of there being no driving range for the players to warm up on, but instead an opportunity for spectators to receive a lesson or two from the professionals on hand.
As title sponsor the Travis Perkins stand sits triumphantly on your way out onto the course and it is a great opportunity for people to try out some of the shots they have seen so far this week.
Nicola McGonagle, Marketing Controller for Travis Perkins, has been pleased with the number of people getting involved.
She said: “With a record attendance yesterday up 34 per cent on last year we have had people of all standards getting involved, many of which we saw last year who are now back looking for a few more tips.”
"It's also a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of all our brands. We operate eight businesses from more than 1,250 sites across the UK. Travis Perkins, Keyline Builders Merchants, City Plumbing Supplies, CCF (Commercial Ceiling Factors), Wickes, Benchmarx and Tile Giant. Travis Perkins also own 30% of the Toolstation company. If you’re long game is already in tip-top shape but you struggle a little with the short stick, then the Skandia tent is where you should be heading.
There you will be subject to the kind of technological analysis usually only available to the world’s best, from a professional trained under the putting guru Harold Swash.
Robert Taylor, Director of Taylor Alison who is staging the stand for Skandia this week, thinks it is a great way for spectators to focus on an area of the game that doesn’t always get too much attention.
He said: “Using the SAMP software Mike Yanskey, our pro this week, can give some really technical analysis. It is a much more interactive stand than last year and with the competition to win a lesson with Tour coach Phil Kenyon and a customised YES! putter we have had people queuing outside for a go.”
Kevin Melia, Marketing Manager for Skandia, feels they get as much out of this as the spectators and that golf is a very good fit for them.
He said: “We are not a company that advertise much. This gives us a chance to say who we are as the people involved in golf are very much our targeted demographic.”
Needless to say with all this on hand a trip to Woburn this week could be just the kick start your game needs.
