Andrew Sherborne raced into contention during the second round of the Belas Clube de Campo Senior Open de Portugal after a glorious start which saw him card three birdies in the opening three holes.
The Englishman, who had a two over par round of 74 despite three birdies on the opening day, was five under par through twelve holes and three under for the tournament, just four shots off the lead set by Jerry Bruner and David J Russell.
The two time European Tour winner in his rookie year on the European Senior Tour and is still chasing his first win, having claimed his only top ten finish at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.
Bruner and Russell are yet to tee off and still hold the joint lead after they both shot superb seven under par rounds of 65, but Roger Chapman was another man threatening early on after a cracking start which saw him shoot two birdies in the opening three holes.
Chapman has been on superb form of late, finishing tied second at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters in September before following that up with a tied third finish at the Casa Serena Open two weeks later.
After an opening round of 70, Chapman’s good start on the second day in Portugal leaves him four under par for the tournament and just three shots off the pace.
Gordon Brand Jnr and Ian Woosnam, meanwhile, also started well and were both one under through three holes and three under for the tournament.
