Denmark’s Steen Tinning is eagerly anticipating a return to his home country when he plays the Shipco Masters promoted by Simon’s Golf Club this week, from June 1-3.
The two-time winner on both the European Tour and Staysure Tour has fond memories playing in Denmark and will join four former-Ryder Cup Captains; Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie, José María Olazábal and Ian Woosnam in the field.
Also teeing up this week is Dame Laura Davies, who will make history in becoming the first female player to play in a professional stroke play event on the over-50s circuit.
The Staysure Tour heads to Denmark for the first tournament on European soil in 2018 as it visits Tinning’s shores and Simon’s Golf Club for the first time in 15 years in a very exciting year for Danish golf.
“It’s going to be great. It’ll be really, really good and I’m really looking forward to it,” Tinning explained.
“We played the Danish Open back in ’03 and I thought that was going to be my last tournament and I was celebrated on the 18th, because I had chosen to stop my career before the tournament at the end of ’03, so to be able to comeback is great.
“I love it and it’s going to be a great tournament.”
With Thomas Bjørn leading Europe in The Ryder Cup Tinning feels there is a great buzz around golf in Denmark. Plus, the chance to play in front of a home crowd filled with friends and family, he expects a great week of golf at Simon’s Golf Club.
“We should give Thomas an invite, he’s almost that old. Obviously with The Ryder Cup year it’s great for Denmark and he’s a very good ambassador. It will be a very exciting year for Denmark at The Ryder Cup.
“I’m sure we’ll get a good crowd for the tournament. There is a great tradition with the Made in Denmark tournament now and I think Danes are in to golf more now. So hopefully we get a good crowd.”
The 55 year old has played some of his best golf on the Staysure Tour and is grateful for the chance to extend his playing career thanks to the partnership with Staysure and the work of the company’s founder and Chairman Ryan Howsam.
“I was so happy to beat him by a shot in the Pro-Am at Sharjah. We don’t want to spoil him too soon, so he needs to go back and work on his game. The partnership we have with Ryan and Staysure is amazing for the Tour.
“I’m looking forward to the season tremendously. I think growing the Staysure Tour is great for the Tour and the amateurs. The amateurs who are going to play with us this year are going to have a great time.
“For us to be able to actually play some more tournaments throughout the year, and not have those long breaks, is great.”
