Sam Torrance was the big mover in the second round of the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open at Conwy (Caernarvonshire) Golf Club.
While most of the most support in north Wales was behind Ian Woosnam, it was another former Ryder Cup Captain, Torrance, who was made the biggest strides, carding a six under par 66 to surge up the leaderboard on three under par.
The Scot turned 59 on Friday and carded an opening round 75, but picked up a shot on the third hole of his second round then chipped in on the fifth, before a hat-trick of birdies immediately after the turn. He then holed from 12ft on the last to seal a fine round as he chases a first top ten finish of the 2012 season.
“I found something in my swing on Pro-Am day,” he said. “I drop the club too much on the inside and I’ve always told my amateur partners when you bring the club back you can see a path and come back on the same path, but I’ve never really tried it myself. I did so on the range and yesterday I hit I great but made a few silly mistakes. Today was great though and I’m close to playing really well.”
