Watson on the up at Walton Heath

The evergreen Tom Watson made an early move on day three of The Senior Open Championship with a brace of birdies in his first four holes to move to three under par.

The American still has some ground to make up on the leading trio of Mark Calcavecchia, Lee Rinker and Rod Spittle, who tee off at 3.10pm, but Watson’s touch on the greens – which deserted him on the first day – appears to have returned, as he made gains on the second and fourth holes at Walton Heath Golf Club.

Another player making the most of the benign conditions in Surrey was European Senior Tour champion David Frost of South Africa, who joined Watson on three under par after opening his third round with successive birdies.

Likewise, two birdies and an eagle three at the 11th hole enabled American Joe Allen to surge up the leaderboard to three under par, whilst defending champion Bernhard Langer of Germany completed a flawless round of 69 to climb to one under par.
