I am delighted to welcome you to Sunningdale for the 2021 Senior Open presented by Rolex.
The Senior Open is returning to Sunningdale for the first time since 2015 when American Marco Dawson triumphed by one stroke over Bernhard Langer and it will be the third time the championship has been played at this renowned course.
It gives me great pleasure to see The Senior Open contested in 2021, following its cancellation last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As life slowly returns to normality, a busy summer of sport is something we have all looked forward to and seeing some of the greatest golfers vie for this major title will be one of the highlights.
In 2019, Bernhard Langer won his fourth Senior Open title. This is more wins than any other player in the championship’s history. He won by two strokes from Englishman Paul Broadhurst across the famed links of Royal Lytham & St Annes.
Langer will return to defend his title and will be joined in the field by former Champion Golfers Tom Lehman, Sandy Lyle, Sir Nick Faldo, Paul Lawrie, Darren Clarke and Ernie Els. They will be joined by other greats of the game including Fred Couples, Retief Goosen, Ian Woosnam, Thomas Bjørn and Colin Montgomerie.
On behalf of The R&A, I would like to express our gratitude to presenting partner Rolex for their continuing support of The Senior Open. I would also like to thank Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, staff, contractors, and the official suppliers of the Championship. We are also extremely grateful for the support provided to us by the UK Government and public health agencies to help us ensure the championship can be staged safely.
Similarly, our sincere thanks are extended to Sunningdale and the volunteers for the tremendous amount of hard work and generosity of time they have given to make The Senior Open a success.
Our partnership with the Staysure Tour has ensured that The Senior Open is one of the most important championships in golf for the champions of our game.
After a year’s absence, I hope you will enjoy watching these tremendous players who continue to push the age barrier with their skill and athleticism. I am excited to see who will become the 2021 Senior Open Champion.
David Meacher, Chairman, Open Championships Committee, The R&A
