Ian Woosnam made nine birdies on Moving Day at the English Senior Open to surge into contention at Rockliffe Hall.
The 56 year old Welshman dropped only one shot in a sublime 64 to reach six under par for the tournament and into a share of fourth place, six behind 36-hole leader Cesar Monasterio.
Searching for his first Senior Tour win since the Berenberg Masters in 2011, it might have been even better for former Masters Tournament winner Woosnam, who missed three short birdie putts after making five gains in his first seven holes before finishing with three in his final four holes for a pleasing day's work.
"It was great, I just managed to find a little something on the range before we went out," said Woosnam, who was also tied second going into the final round last week at the SSE Scottish Senior Open before eventually finishing tied 19th after a final-round of 80 at Fairmont St Andrews.
"It was low anyway and but for a couple of really short putts it could have been really low."
Woosnam, who has used a broom-handle putter a lot in recent years, reverted a short putter at last month's Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex and said that, although he is still getting used to the change, his renowned short-game touch is slowly returning.
"The way I’ve been putting recently I was just happy to two putt sometimes," he continued.
“What has been poor over the last few weeks has been my chipping. I’m usually a really good chipper. I worked hard on the practice ground last night so I was happy."
