Loves basketball and was a strong player in high school, but felt he was not tall enough to compete seriously. Wu did not start playing golf until he was 17 and learned the game from his brother, a single-digit handicapper.

Turned professional in 2007 and began his career on the Asian Tour in 2008. Wu also played on the Japan Golf Tour, becoming the first golfer from China to win on that Tour in 2012 at the Toshin Golf Tournament. He won his second title at the 2013 Heiwa PGM Championship.

Became the first Chinese player to win on home soil in a DP World Tour event at the 2015 Volvo China Open. The following year he became the first Chinese player to win multiple titles on the DP World Tour with his win at the Lyoness Open.

Secured a third victory at the 2018 KLM Open and had to wait three and a half years for his next victory, becoming the first Chinese player to win in Africa on the DP World Tour at the 2022 Magical Kenya Open.

Claimed his second Volvo China Open title, and fifth DP World Tour success, in 2025, six days short of ten years since his maiden triumph.
