Finally has another shot on the European Tour after his first attempt, in 2008, ended prematurely in tragic circumstances. Having won his card at the 2007 Qualifying School, he had made just ten appearances when his father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and he quit to look after him until he died. Received a medical exemption for 2009, but admitted he was “a broken man” and, with the exception of a handful of co-sanctioned events each season, has not returned until this year. Was the joint winner of the 2015 Qualifying School Final Stage, helped by a 64 in the second round. Described it as a “great moral victory” after a “long, hard slog”. Started playing golf at the age of eight, deciding to focus on golf over cricket and rugby when he was 14. A broken collar bone aged 18 had little effect on his rise through the amateur ranks, which peaked in 1997 when he won the South African Stroke Play title, the Transvaal Amateur, the Western Province Stroke Play title, and was also an Individual winner with the South African Team. A true boxing aficionado, he includes boxing training – including sparring – in his fitness programme. A seven-time winner on the Sunshine Tour.
