Bernhard Langer, the reigning Senior Open Presented by Rolex Champion, cannot wait to defend his title at the Old Course at Sunningdale Golf Club from July 23-26.
The two-time Masters Tournament winner and a record 11-time Senior Major Champion clinched an unprecedented fourth Senior Open title at Royal Lytham & St Annes last year, and will return to Sunningdale, where he came close to lifting his third Senior Open Trophy in 2015.
Langer, who battled with eight-time European Tour Number One Colin Montgomerie and American rookie Marco Dawson, was narrowly beaten to the title by one stroke as Dawson made birdie on the 72nd hole. Since then, the ever-impressive 2004 European Ryder Cup Captain has won six Senior Major titles, including the Senior Open twice.
No player has ever won the same Senior Major five times but following his success last year, where he overcame torrid weather conditions and a three-shot deficit, Langer, once again, can set a new record when he tees it up at this season’s championship.
“I am really looking forward to returning to Sunningdale Golf Club,” said Langer. “I remember the battle I had with Marco and Colin a few years ago, so it will be good to go back and create new memories.
“To win The Senior Open means a great deal as it is one of the highlights of the year and it was a great feeling to lift The Senior Open Trophy last season.
“There are new, younger stars taking part every year, making the event one of the toughest to win, and I expect much of the same this time.
“Sunningdale is a special course with a lot of history and I have been in the mix on the two occasions the championship has been held there, so it would mean a lot to perform well once again.”
In 2019, Langer came from three strokes behind at the start of the final round to win his fourth Senior Open title. The German is just one of a host of European Ryder Cup Captains, Major Champions and European Tour winners who will be gracing the Old Course at Sunningdale for Europe’s only Senior Major Championship.
