The American, who finished runner-up to Miguel Ángel Jiménez at last year’s event, carded rounds of 68-64-70-68 for a six-stroke victory to lift the trophy at Greystone Golf & Country Club on Monday afternoon.

Team USA’s 2020 Ryder Cup Captain began the final round two shots ahead but had to wait until Monday to win his maiden Senior Major following Sunday’s postponement of play due to lightning and heavy rainfall.

The 52-year-old recorded just one bogey during the four rounds on his way to claiming an emotional fourth victory in 18 PGA Tour Champions events.

“This is special,” he said, wiping tears from his eyes during a TV interview. “I get emotional. I hate this part.”

“It was finally good to get this under my belt, get a Major win out here. I never was able to do that on the regular tour, so this is the next best thing.

“To show myself that I'm able to handle the heat down the end on the last day. I hit some really quality shots today, so I'll take a lot from that.”

Staysure Tour members Paul Broadhurst and Bernhard Langer finished in a share of sixth place on a nine under par total, with fellow member Ian Woosnam two strokes behind in tied 12th.
