From October 21-24, some of Europe’s best golfers will arrive in the Balearic Islands for the final event of the 2021 Spanish Swing
Santa Ponça in Mallorca will host the sixth European Tour event on Spanish soil this season, bringing the run of three consecutive tournaments in Spain to an end after the ACCIONA Open de España and the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.
The Mallorca Golf Open will mark the return of top-level golf to the island ten years after the last tournament played in the beautiful island.
Santa Ponça will welcome top European and World-class players such as; Martin Kaymer, the former World Number One and a winner of two Majors; Thomas Pieters, a four-time winner on the European Tour; and a large part of the Spanish Armada, headed by Gonzalo Fdéz-Castaño and Alvaro Quiros, each with seven European Tour victories; Nacho Elvira, recent winner of the 2021 Cazoo Open; and Adri Arnaus, runner-up at the ACCIONA Open de España last week.
The Spanish players will take historical inspiration from the last two winners at Santa Ponça. Severiano Ballesteros won the 1988 Balearic Open and Miguel Ángel Jiménez triumphed at the 1998 Turespaña Open de Baleares, which was the last occasion the European Tour visited the course designed by Falco Nardi.
In addition to Kaymer and Pieters, there are a number of players teeing it up in Mallorca who know what it is like to experience a Ryder Cup. Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson, David Howell, Thorbjørn Olesen and Peter Hansen, a winner in Spain and once in Mallorca (2010), have confirmed their participation in the Mallorca Golf Open.
Big hitting South African Wilco Nienaber, who averages more than 323 yards off the tee will also tee it up and he will have a great challenge on the tenth hole, which is one of the longest par fives in Europe at 590 metres.
The tournament was a late addition to the 2021 Race to Dubai, replacing the Trophée Hassan II on the schedule, but it will be the perfect ending to the Spanish Swing in October after Madrid and Valderrama.
The Mallorca Golf Open is promoted by E-Motion and receives the help of sponsors such as Isla de Mallorca, the Balearic Government, Consell de Turismo, Melia Hotel, OK Mobility, Allianz, Engel&Volkers, Perlentaucher, Red Bull/Organics and Kaze.
