Omega European Masters: DP World Tour Fantasy ones to watch

The DP World Tour returns to Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club for the second event of the Back 9 as Matt Fitzpatrick chases history in the stunning Swiss Alps.

Major Champion Fitzpatrick and Switzerland have a vivid relationship as the Englishman targets his tenth DP World Tour title, which could see him match a record jointly held by Seve Ballesteros.

The World Number 27 has already won this prestigious event on two occasions and became the first player in 40 years, since the great Spaniard, to successfully defend his crown in 2018.

Fitzpatrick came in a tie for third in last year's event and victory this week will see him join Ballesteros, Harold Henning from South Africa and Welshman Dai Rees to have secured a hat-trick of titles in the tournament's steeped history.

Former champions Sebastian Söderberg, Rasmus Højgaard, Thriston Lawrence and Richie Ramsay all also tee it up alongside 2010 winner and tournament ambassador Miguel Ángel Jiménez, who makes his 34th appearance at the age of 60.

Fantasy Insight: In the early stages of players picking their teams, Fitzpatrick is currently most chosen, featuring in over 80% of squads - perhaps not a surprise given his record up the mountain.

Rasmus may have won this title before but it is twin brother Nicolai Højgaard, who is next most-selected at just over 75%, with Matt Wallace third in just over 57% of teams.

Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.

Favourite - Matt Fitzpatrick

Not only is the Englishman the most popular pick with our players so far but he is also heavily fancied by the bookmakers, with many having his odds in single figures to claim a third title.

And that should come as no surprise as outside of his victories at this event in 2017 and 2018, he also has a second in 2015, a top ten in 2017 and a third last year.

Since missing the cut on his debut, Fitzpatrick has registered 21 rounds in the 60s from 24 played and is a quite frankly mind-bending 74 under par.

He was a two-time winner worldwide last year at the RBC Heritage and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and is the highest-ranked player in the field this week at 27th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Form Horse - Thriston Lawrence

Ever since winning his first title at the opening event of the DP World Tour era in the 2022 season, the South African has been remarkably consistent in his brilliance.

Later that season, he added this title to his CV en route to being crowned Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the year and won twice again last term for back-to-back top 20 finishes on the Race to Dubai.

It may seem odd to be going back two seasons when talking about form but he has never truly dipped, starting the 2024 season with four top tens and adding another four to become Rory McIlroy's nearest contender for the Harry Vardon trophy.

His eight top tens are the most of any player this season and he has two-runner up finishes and a fourth at The Open in his last five starts.

Wild Card - Jacob Skov Olesen

We know what you are thinking: an amateur invite is a pretty wild selection even for a wild card. But hear us out because this Dane is not just one of the many prodigiously talented amateurs out there, he is enjoying the summer of his life.

Having earlier represented his country at the Junior Golf World Cup, Eisenhower Trophy and European Amateur Team Championship, in June of this year he became the first Dane to win the Amateur Championship, earning him entry into The Open.

In an incredible run of events, he then finished fifth at the European Amateur Championship, played for the International Team in the Palmer Cup and Denmark in the European Amateur Team Championship, made the cut at The Open and helped win the St Andrews Trophy for Continental Europe.

After that hectic six weeks in a row, he took a break but returned to make his debut in a regular DP World Tour event, finishing fifth on home soil at the Danish Golf Championship, having been just three off the lead heading into Sunday.

Could he be the first amateur winner on Tour since Shane Lowry at the 2009 Irish Open?

Looking Back - Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo

Niklas Nørgaard entered last week siting second on the season-long points table and racked up 217 more for the 1,793 (5.48%) players who picked him, with 83 cashing in by making him their captain.

Our Favourite Tyrrell Hatton finished in a tie for 18th after topping the leaderboard after 36 holes and while Form Horse Frederic Lacroix missed the cut, Wild Card Lucas Bjerregaard continued his recent renaissance in a tie for 25th.
