The stage is set for a dramatic finale to the Volvo Masters Andalucia at Club de Golf Valderrama after the completion of the third round in bright morning sunshine saw Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden and Spain’s Carlos Rodiles locked together in a share of the lead on 206, ten under par.
Both players were thwarted by darkness on Saturday night after playing 12 holes, and they resumed at 8.30am with Rodiles at 11 under par, two ahead of long-time leader Jacobson.
However the man from Malaga dropped shots at the 13th and 16th to slip back to nine under playing the last. Jacobson, meanwhile, pitched beautifully to 18 inches at the 17th for a birdie to reclaim the lead on ten under.
That wasn’t the end of the drama, however. Rodiles, shut out behind trees on the 18th, pulled out his five iron and cut his approach to 20 feet, where he holed out for a birdie. Jacobson got up and down from the fringe and ensure the tie was shared going into the fourth round.
Denmark’s Anders Hansen lies in third place on 212, four under par and six strokes behind the pair at the top of the leaderboard. Rodiles said: “It’s going to be hard for the guys behind but on this course you never know. It’s all set up nicely.”
Jacobson added: “I shot a 64 on the first day so someone else can do it this afternoon. It’s very possible with the weather so much better.”
