Catlin has hunger to win again

John Catlin admits he is greedy for more success as he looks for a third European Tour win in eight months at the 2021 Austrian Golf Open.

The American held off two time Major Champion Martin Kaymer to win last season's Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucia Masters and then just three weeks later lifted the trophy at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

To take down a former World Number One at one of the European Tour's most storied and difficult venues in Real Club Valderrama and then lift one of its most prestigious trophies in the same month showed that Catlin truly belonged, but the 30-year-old has no intention of resting on his laurels.

After a third round 71 at Diamond Country Club, he heads into the final round at seven under, just two shots behind Kaymer and Spaniard Alejandro Cañizares, and he is desperate to make it a quickfire hat-trick of victories.

"I think you always have something to prove and if you think you’ve got it all figured out you’re going to put yourself behind the eight-ball," he said.

"I think that’s the beauty of golf, I guess we’re kind of greedy in a sense. It’s never really good enough - you win once, you want to win twice; you win twice, you want to win three times and you win out here, you want to win a Major.

"You’re always trying to do things a little bit better, you’re always trying to do things better than you used to but that’s the beauty of it."

If he is to lift the trophy in Atzenbrugg, Catlin will also have to get past Maximilian Kieffer, who sits a shot ahead of him after a 68.

"It was very good, I had a good day," said the German. "The long game was very solid and that has been very strong for all three rounds.

"The putting has been a bit shaky here and there and that was the same today as well, so I’m feeling confident for tomorrow. I haven’t practised my putting a lot in the last few weeks.

"I’ve spent a lot of time getting my swing where I want it to be because I haven’t hit the ball very well for about two years and you can’t put your energy into all parts of the game, so I’ll be practising the putting a little bit more now and hopefully the flow and the rhythm can come back which is what I’m struggling with."
