Cazoo Classic - Day one digest

Everything you need to know from day one at Hillside Golf Club.

Waring Pepperell

Local lad Paul stormed to the summit while a couple of Scots were flying high on the first day of the 2022 Cazoo Classic.

Here is everything you need to know from day one at Hillside Golf Club.

Bunker brilliance hands Waring the lead

Home favourite Paul Waring produced a phenomenal eagle-birdie finish at 17 and 18 to move clear at the top of a bunched leaderboard. He had been part of a six-way tie for the lead on six under before holing his tricky bunker shot at the par-five 17th for a stunning eagle. He then backed that up with a 13-foot birdie putt on the last to sign for a course-record-equalling 63, get to nine under par and lead by two.

Dubuisson and Mansell go close at the seventh

If you saw Victor Dubuisson and Richard Mansell's tee-shots at the par-three seventh you could be forgiven for thinking the pair were involved in a match play contest. After Dubuisson nearly holed his effort, Mansell sent his to tap-in range as they both made birdies.

Pepperell holes out for eagle

After sending his tee-shot at the 17th into a bunker, Eddie Pepperell found himself 239 yards back after two. But he managed to hole his third for a bonus eagle. How good was this?

Speaking of match play... Shortly after Pepperell's eagle, his playing partner Waring went and holed his bunker shot for an eagle of his own on the same hole.

Scots flying high

With his maiden DP World Tour title defence coming up at next week's Hero Open, Grant Forrest is hitting form at the right time. He fired a sparkling 66 on day one to get to six under. Fellow Scot Craig Howie was another shot back after his opening 67. Forrest said: "I just feel things are starting to come together, it has been a bit of a struggle this year so far. My long game today was the best it has been for a long time."

Howell goes low

David Howell is just two tournaments away from joining the DP World Tour's 700 club but that doesn't mean he isn't able to give the young guns a run for their money. The 47-year-old began his week at Hillside with two birdies before signing for a 69 - his lowest opening round of the season so far.
