Wentwood Hills is a spectacular 330-acre course, built alongside the River Usk, with some holes on the steep hillside and others on the valley floor. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr and completed last summer after two years work costing £8m. The course has been built to an exceptional standard, with:
- multiple tees on each hole
- under-soil drainage on every tee, green, fairway and bunkers
- creeping bent grass from the United States on the greens and rye on the fairways
- a full-length buggy path
- water features on eight holes.
Wentwood Hills was opened in May 1999 by Ryder Cup Captain Mark James and former Masters Champion and World number 1 Ian Woosnam, MBE. The course was used for a PGA Mastercard Tour event and the European Amateur Championships in 1999. This year, it will stage The Celtic Manor Wales Open – a PGA European Tour event with a £750,000 prize fund – and the PGA Cup matches between the United States and Great Britain & Ireland.
