Day three digest: WGC-Mexico Championship

Everything you need to know from day three at Chapultepec Golf Club.

Jon Rahm made history and there was a big game of chase the ace but at the end of the day Justin Thomas was the man to catch in Mexico City.

Here is everything you need to know from day three of the 2020 WGC-Mexico Championship.

Record breaker Rahm

Rahm's start to the defence of his Race to Dubai title was not going as planned when he sat four over after 27 holes at the season's opening World Golf Championships event. He came home in 30 on day two to drag himself back into red numbers and what followed on day three was the lowest round of his short yet brilliant career so far. His 61 was also a course record at Chapultepec and the joint lowest round in WGC history. He heads into the final day four off the lead.

Chase the ace

We'd only had two holes-in-one so far for the season when we arrived in Mexico. On Saturday we had two in a day. First Chez Reavie did this at the third.

Then Rahm did this on the 17th.

Thomas leads the way

It may have been the Jon Rahm show on Moving Day but let's not forget the man who is in pole position to win his second WGC title on Sunday. Consistent brilliance is one of Justin Thomas' calling cards and he sandwiched eight birdies with bogeys on the first and last in a 65 that left him at 15 under. He enters the final day a shot ahead of Patrick Reed and Erik van Rooyen. "I'll just go out and play golf and keep doing what we're doing," he said. "For the most part I feel like I'm playing well, doing all the right things. It's just my bogeys this week have been sloppy, so I'd really like to have a clean card tomorrow and not have any of those and just give ourselves a good chance the last couple of holes."

No fear from EVR

Van Rooyen is starting to feel very much at home on the big stage. After going out in the final group on Saturday, he will do the same again on Sunday in the presence of two Major Champions, not that he is the slightest bit fazed. "You've just got to go play golf, man," he said. "You can't overthink this kind of stuff. At the end of the day, there's 18 holes in front of you and you've got to navigate it the best you can. I can't control what Justin Thomas does, he's a phenomenal player. I can't control what Patrick Reed does or the guys behind us. Jon Rahm just went out and shot 61 today. Who's to say one of us is going to win? All I know is I'm going to focus on myself and do my thing." A bit more luck like this and he could be holding the Gene Sarazen Cup.

Anything you can do

The altitude has made some par fours driveable this week, with the first always a a target and the second even proving gettable. Birdies on the first were almost expected from Bryson DeChambeau and Van Rooyen but to follow it them with eagles on the second was remarkable. Take a bow gents.

Rory hitting bombs

Okay, so the first and second are gettable, but the 12th? That should be out of reach. Not for Rory McIlroy - just the 415 yards.
