Day two digest: 2021 Cazoo Open supported by Gareth Bale

Everything you need to know from day two at The Celtic Manor Resort.

The Celtic Manor Resort

There were family affairs everywhere, Masahiro stole the show, Nico was hitting bombs and Aaron had a dance partner on day two of the 2021 Cazoo Open supported by Gareth Bale.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday in Wales.

He ain't heavy..........

The Molinaris and the Højgaards are well established as successful siblings on the European Tour but what about the Elviras? Nacho followed up a 64 with a 67 to get to 11 under and lead by two in Wales but that is only half the story. At the Italian Challenge on the European Challenge Tour, younger brother Manuel followed up a 67 with a 64 to get to, you guessed it, 11 under. At one point on Friday we had a pair of siblings leading events on the European and Challenge Tours on the same score. "It’s unbelievable," said Nacho. "He’s been playing great. I saw this morning he started with four birdies in a row and I didn’t want to look any more. It’s awesome that we are both 11 under and leading, it’s interesting - that must have never happened before."

Speaking of siblings......

While the Molinaris, Højgaards and Elviras may all be professionals, Matt Fitzpatrick's brother Alex is still an amateur - but that does not mean he can't make a big impression. The 22-year-old was playing just his second European Tour event but is enjoying a stellar amateur career, sitting fourth in the World Rankings with two Walker Cup appearances and a nomination for the Fred Haskins Award - the prize given to the top collegiate golfer in the United States - under his belt. On Friday he holed a clutch putt to make the cut on the number, but he is still waiting for his Rolex Series champion big brother to reward all his success with a new set of wheels. "I tell him I hit it further than him, that's about all I've got really," he said. "Other than that I've not got much on him so that's pretty much all I tell him. I've been waiting for a car for about four years now and there's still not one sat on the drive so I'll be patiently waiting."

Kawamura blows them away

While the eyes of the Japanese public may have been on the Olympic opening ceremony on Friday, maybe a few were very happy watching events in South Wales. In far windier conditions than on day one, Masahiro Kawamura produced a 63 that was not only the lowest round of the week by one shot, but the lowest of the day by four, beating the scoring average by a mind boggling 9.84 shots. "Today was perfect golf," he said. "A difficult golf course and difficult conditions - today was perfect. I’m excited and looking forward to tomorrow. It’s my best score on the European Tour. I enjoy playing on the Tour so much. I love travelling and love going to many different countries." We love having you Masahiro.

The Dude was hitting bombs

Nicolas Colsaerts holds the record for the longest drive in European Tour history at Celtic Manor, with a tee shot that went 447 yards. He tried it again on Friday.
