DP World Tour | Data Evolution presented by Fortinet

Introducing Data Evolution presented by Fortinet, a brand-new series focusing on the crucial role technology, data and connectivity play in different aspects of delivering a DP World Tour tournament.

The first episode of the series tells the story of how the DP World Tour’s Referees and Rules Officials utilise data in course set-up, pace of play and within rulings at our tournaments.

Analysing the data and statistics from the previous year’s tournament, Rules Officials will use this information to determine hole locations, pin positions, green speeds and even the width of the fairways.

The team will typically analyse a huge array of data, including elements such as GIR (greens in regulation), scoring, scoring holes and fairways hit to assist them in their decision-making process, combining this data with their vast experience of working at tournaments all over the world.

We spent time with Senior Tournament Referee Mats Lanner and Tournament Director David Williams at the recent DS Automobiles Italian Open to see how their use of data is applied in real-time, helping to prepare the course pre-tournament as well as during tournament play.

Deputy Director of Tour Operations Kevin Feeney also joined the episode to discuss the integration, evolution and increased use of data at the Tour to help inform decisions at the top level of the game.
