Three-time European Tour winner and tournament ambassador Bernd Wiesberger will return to his homeland for the 2017 Lyoness Open powered by Sporthilfe Cashback Card from June 8-11.
A winner of the tournament in 2012, the 31 year old will be joined by some of Europe’s biggest golf names at Atzenbrugg’s Diamond Country Club, including defending champion Ashun Wu, and 21-time European Tour champion Miguel Ángel Jiménez.
“Despite the tight tournament schedule in the summer, the Lyoness Open is an absolute highlight for me,” said Wiesberger.
I am pleased to be the tournament’s ambassador and to be able to participate again this year.
"It is always something special to compete in front of a home crowd and I can already look back on several good results and many great memories of the Lyoness Open.
“The Diamond Course offers ideal conditions to prepare for the US Open that will take place the following week. I am convinced that the course will again present in a top state.”
After a two-year break for Jiménez, the Spaniard returns to compete in Austria, a country he now calls home and one he has enjoyed during his illustrious career, finishing inside the top 20 in all six of his European Tour appearances on Austrian soil.
“Golf fans in Austria took me to their hearts from the beginning, thus the week at Atzenbrugg will be very special for me,” the 53 year old said.
“I am very happy to return to the Diamond Country Club and participate in the Lyoness Open. Since Austria has become my home, I feel quite close to the club and everybody who is involved in the organisation of the event.”
Jiménez is not the only longstanding player to look forward to for Austrian golf enthusiasts, who will also be able to watch one of their compatriots, Markus Brier.
The 48 year old, who won the 2006 edition of the Austrian Open, has been invited by the tournament organisers and will thus compete on the European Tour for the first time since August 2013.
“Since I will start to compete on the Senior Tour next year, the Lyoness Open is the perfect occasion for me to find out how good my game is right now,” said Brier.
This year’s edition of the Lyoness Open will also see a duel of generations, with two young Austrian golfers, Matthias Schwab (22) and Sepp Straka (24) on the entry list. Currently, Schwab is Number One on the European Amateur Golf Ranking and Number Four of the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Diamond County Club President Christian Guzy said: “Every year we want the spectators to appreciate the fascination of golf while at the same time savor a pleasant atmosphere. Our aim is that both players and spectators can enjoy their stay at the Diamond Country Club.”
Silvia Kelemen, Head of Public Relations and Corporate Communication, Lyoness, said: “We are proud to be a longstanding partner of Austria’s biggest golf tournament. As main sponsor of the Lyoness Open we definitely benefit from the coverage of the event in international media. It considerably increases the degree of awareness of our brands. In the future we also want to be more active in the field of amateur golf.”
