Lee Westwood, who won at the 38th hole in a thrilling final last year, heads a strong international field for the 2001 Cisco World Match Play Championship to be played at Wentworth between October 11th – 14th.
Mark McCormack, who created the event 38 years ago, confirmed that in spite of the Ryder Cup decision the 2001 World Match Play Championship will definitely take place. McCormack did point out that “the postponement of the Ryder Cup and the understandable uncertainty over whether some players are willing to travel means we cannot confirm the names of all 12 players at this stage.”
Westwood will be joined by Colin Montgomerie, winner of the Championship in 1999 and finalist last year; US Open Champion Retief Goosen from South Africa, currently leading the Volvo Order of Merit; plus other top European Tour players Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn and Padraig Harrington. Also in the line-up are World No. 5 Vijay Singh, currently 3rd on the USPGA Tour money list and Mike Weir, the Canadian left-hander who won the 2000 WGC American Express Championship.
A further announcement on the 4 remaining players in the 12-man line up will be made shortly.
The Cisco World Match Play Championship offers a £1 million prize fund with £250,000 going to the winner. KPMG Consulting are again supporting the event as Official Partners.
