European Tour Screening Protocol debuts

The European Tour Screening Protocol, which offers a groundbreaking way to measure players’ physical fitness for performing a golf swing, is being used for the first time at this week’s BMW PGA Championship.

It has been developed over the past 18 months by The European Tour Performance Institute Advisory Board, which is led by Rob Hillman and Dr Roger Hawkes in consultation with Sports Biomechanics Consultant Jean-Jacques Rivet.

The Screening  is being offered to players in contention for a place in Colin Montgomerie’s European Ryder Cup Team and it was a Welshman, Rhys Davies, who was first to undergo the testing in The European Tour’s Race to Dubai Physio Unit.

Rob Hillman, Director of The Race to Dubai Physio Unit, said: “We have developed the testing to show optimal physical performance, medical history and physical movement, which was what Rhys was interested in.

“We can identify any areas of concern the players can work on in terms of their swing. There are 20 physical tests recreating the movements in a swing and the screening shows up any areas of possible improvement, looking at their movement capacity. We have also integrated this with the medical staff to give the players a kind of quick MOT.

“It’s not explicitly for The Ryder Cup, it is something that the players should be thinking about every day out on Tour.”
