England’s Ross Fisher moved to within two shots of leader Lucas Glover as The US Open Championship moved to a thrilling conclusion at Bethpage Black.
With regulation play running over into Monday for the first time in 26 years, the players returned to the course at 0900 (1400 BST) on a breezy, but thankfully dry day in New York.
And Fisher ensured he remained in contention for a first Major title, carding two birdies and two bogeys on the remainder of his front nine to reach the turn in 36, having bogeyed the first hole last night.
Two pars followed at the start of the back nine, putting him in a tie for second with overnight leader Ricky Barnes, world number two Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan, with Glover hanging on to his lead through 11 holes.
Behind Fisher on one under was Canada’s Mike Weir, who holed a sensational bunker shot for birdie on the seventh, with defending champion Tiger Woods holding the clubhouse lead on level par.
Fisher started his final round strongly with a birdie at the par five fourth, but slipped back with bogeys at the fifth and seventh holes.
However, a sensational approach to the ninth set up a second birdie of the day and moved Fisher right back into contention.
Barnes, meanwhile, had to battle hard to salvage a trio of pars on the resumption of play, but the former US Amateur champion soon saw his lead slip away as he made four successive bogeys between the fifth and the eighth.
Playing partner Glover appeared to be dealing with the pressure more effectively and looked far more solid, but he also dropped shots at the third, fifth and ninth to drop to four under.
Mahan was arguably playing the most consistent golf of the day, while Mickelson followed bogeys at the sixth and seventh with birdies at the ninth and 12th to raise his victory hopes.
Woods briefly threatened to challenge the leaders with birdies at 13 and 14, but a bogey at the 15th followed and he could only manage par on the final three holes
Henrik Stenson finished the tournament strongly with a round of 68 - putting him inside the top ten at one over par.
Fellow Swede Peter Hanson was also on one over through 15 holes, while Northern Ireland youngster Rory McIlroy matched Stenson’s final round score to be a shot further back on his US Open debut.
Spain’s Sergio Garcia ended the tournament alongside McIlroy on two over following a round of 70.
