Harwood strikes gold

Winner: Mike Harwood
69 68 67 67 = 271
First prize: £66,660

Australian Mike Harwood carried off two of the European Tour’s most prestigious titles in 1990, a season in which the 6ft 4in golfer from Sydney finished sixth on the Volvo Order of Merit.

Harwood, now 40, won the Volvo PGA Championship and the season-ending Volvo Masters for a fabulous double which earned him more money that year than on his previous four on the European Tour.

At Wentworth Club, he opened with rounds of 69 and 68 to trail halfway leaders, the flu-stricken José Maria Olazábal and South African John Bland, by three shots.

However Harwood found his stride over the last two days, shooting a pair of 67s to edge out Nick Faldo and Bland by one shot with a 17-under-par total of 271, with Olazábal a further stroke adrift.

He said: “My ball striking was terrible all week. Fortunately my putting was exceptional.”
