Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain, Bernhard Langer of Germany, has reluctantly withdrawn from the 50th Volvo PGA Championship, to be played at Wentworth Club, Surrey, England, from May 27-30, due to injury.
The 46 year old, who has participated in 20 Volvo PGA Championships in his illustrious career, winning on three occasions at Wentworth Club (1987, 1993 and 1995), is suffering from a wrist problem which also forced him to withdraw from this week’s Deutsche Bank-SAP Open TPC of Europe in his native Germany.
The 50th Volvo PGA Championship features many of the world’s leading players, including Darren Clarke, Ben Curtis, Ernie Els, Nick Faldo, Retief Goosen, Miguel Angel Jiménez, Paul Lawrie, Sandy Lyle, Colin Montgomerie, José Maria Olazábal, Costantino Rocca, Adam Scott, Vijay Singh, Lee Westwood and Ian Woosnam, in addition to defending champion, Ignacio Garrido.
Langer said: “It is with deep regret that I must withdraw from the Volvo PGA Championship. I was looking forward immensely to competing this year as it marks the 50th anniversary of this great Championship, our premier event on The European Tour International Schedule. It was a thrill to win this wonderful title once, never mind three times, and nothing would have given me greater pleasure than to have won for a fourth time next week.
“Unfortunately, my wrist is currently unable to withstand the rigours of tournament play and it is important for the remainder of the season that I make sure that the injury has healed completely before I resume competition.”
