Johnstone captures title

Winner: Tony Johnstone
67 70 70 65 = 272
First prize: £100,000

Tony Johnstone arrived at Wentworth having lost a play-off to Peter Senior in the Benson & Hedges International Open.

A week later he lost another to Christy O’Connor Jnr in the Dunhill British Masters.

But sandwiched in between was one which did not get away - victory in the Volvo PGA Championship.

Johnstone fended off a determined surge by Gordon Brand Jnr and José Maria Olazábal to capture the title with a closing seven-under-par 65.

It was a triumph which prompted the talkative Zimbabwean to joke: “By law, everyone should feel this good at least once!”

Jamie Spence, after rounds of 67 and 66, held the halfway lead as the ‘big guns’ failed to ignite. Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and Olazábal all made the top ten, but only the latter really challenged for the title.

Swede Magnus Sunesson, with a dazzling third round 64, moved into pole position - but it was Johnstone, with an outward 30, who burst through to lift the £100,000 first prize – the first six figure winning cheque to be presented to the Champion at Wentworth Club.
