Langer targets record-extending fifth Senior Open success

Bernhard Langer is relishing the opportunity to win The Senior Open Presented by Rolex for a record-extending fifth time at Gleneagles from July 21-24.

The 64-year-old German made history at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2019 as he won the Europe’s only Senior Major for a fourth time, eclipsing Gary Player and Tom Watson with whom he had previously shared the record for most victories. His win at Royal Lytham & St Annes was also a record-extending 11th Senior Major Championship.

Two-time Masters champion Langer, who finished second at The Open on two occasions, is hopeful he can taste further success when he visits the King’s Course in Scotland this summer.

“This event is always very special for me and I am so looking forward to teeing it up in the Senior Open again this year,” Langer said. “I have been very lucky to win this Championship four times and it will always hold a dear place in my heart.

“Being a four-time winner of this event is one of the best accolades you can have, and I'm very happy and proud to have that achievement.

“It was always my dream, as a European player, to win The Open Championship. Everybody wants to win the only Major we have, The Open, and I came close but never managed it. I have been able to win this Championship four times and hopefully there's one or two more left in me and I would love to do it in Scotland this year.”

Langer landed his 43rd Champions Tour victory at February’s Chubb Classic to continue his streak of winning at least once in in each of his fourteen seasons on the America-based circuit for golfers aged 50 and over. He is also just two titles behind Hale Irwin’s long-standing record of 45 victories.

Ahead of his 14th appearance in The Senior Open, he says the event remains a stand-out event in his schedule, having first won at Carnoustie in 2010 and then added subsequent titles at Royal Porthcawl in both 2014 and 2017 prior to his history-making success three years ago.

“Rolex have been a great supporter of both The Senior Open and golf in general for many years and I am also grateful to them for their support of me personally,” he added.

“This event is one of the highlights of the year and I am really excited to return to UK to play in July.”
