MacIntyre finding the positives in Portugal

Robert MacIntyre is hoping an aggressive, positive approach can bring him a second European Tour title as he makes his debut at the Portugal Masters this week.

The Scot was crowned the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year in 2019 and followed that up with a first European Tour title in 2020.

His rise in the game has seen him play in all four Major Championships and two World Golf Championships in 2021, recording top tens at The Open and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and top 15s at the Masters Tournament and WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational.

The 25-year-old has also been testing his game more across the Atlantic and while he admits he is still adapting to new challenges, he is eager to tackle them head on.

"I want to win every week I turn up," he said. "I've got goals that I've set and there's little things that I'm trying to work on within my team... to be more aggressive from certain numbers.

"I think that's come into my golf because of some of the golf tournaments I've been playing in in the last year where you've had to almost be more defensive than offensive. I'm trying to flip the switch now and become more offensive than defensive.

"There's little things in my game that I'm still trying to work on and this week's a big week for that.

"I've had a couple of weeks off and done some practice and changed a few things - I'm really looking forward to it.

"I'm in good spirits, the game feels good, it's just putting it all together.

"There's a lot of expectation on me from everywhere, myself especially, I'm expecting a lot from my game.

I feel like my game is there, I just need to not worry about consequences and don't think about what could happen and think what can happen

"I feel like my game is there, I just need to not worry about consequences and don't think about what could happen and think what can happen.

"That's one of the main things for me just now, is trying to be more positive. Everyone that knows me knows that I'm not the most positive human being but we're getting there, we're trying to change that."

Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course was famously the scene of Oliver Fisher's historic first European Tour 59 in 2018 and, while MacIntyre can see how that score would be possible on the layout, he will not be taking it lightly.

"I enjoy this type of golf," he said. "I think the back nine is probably the bigger test where you can get caught out more but overall I think it's a good track and I'm just ready to get going.

"59 is an incredible score, 69 is a decent score as well. It's a golf course that you get lots of chances if you're driving it well but if you're not driving it well you're going to get punished."
