Despite a frustrating third day at the Masters Tournament which left him three strokes off the pace, Thomas Björn still believes he can capture his maiden Major Championship with a sub-70 round on the final day at Augusta National.
The Dane was delighted with his form on the front nine, with birdies at the sixth and ninth holes carrying him to five under par for the tournament and within striking distance of Bubba Watson’s diminishing lead.
But after finding the water with his rescue club on the par five 13th and then compounding the error with a similar approach to the 15th hole, Björn slipped back into the chasing pack.
Having failed to convert a glorious chance for birdie on the 16th, the 15-time European Tour winner dropped another shot on the next hole; and after another birdie chance went begging on the final green, he finished the day in a tie for seventh place on two under par.
But Björn was still keen to accentuate the positives, saying: “I played really, really well today. I played the first ten holes as well as I’ve ever played at Augusta.
“So when you walk off the golf course with a 73, playing golf to something in the 60s, then that’s disappointing. But I’m still in there with a chance. If I can play all 18 holes like I did the first ten tomorrow, I won’t be far away.
“I’ll have to shoot something in the 60s to win this golf tournament, but I feel like I’m playing well enough to do that.”
