McGowan makes good start

Ross McGowan made an impressive start to the Estoril Open de Portugal to go six under par for an early lead at Oitavos Dunes.

The 26 year old has enjoyed success in this part of the world before, having taken the Estoril Challenge de Portugal at Quinta da Marinha in 2007 on The Challenge Tour.

The Englishman carded six birdies - including back-to-back at the tenth and 11th - with no bogeys to reach six under through 15 holes.

That was enough to give him a two shot lead over compatriot Simon Dyson and Scot Alastair Forsyth.

South African duo Hennie Otto and Andrew McLardy were amongst the group at three under.

Dyson - who appeared to be having some problems with a shoulder injury - birdied consecutive par threes at the 14th and 15th to move into contention, while Forsyth replied to a bogey at the 18th with consecutive gained shots on the first and second to join Dyson on four under through 14 holes.
