Despite missing out on victory in last week’s WGC-Cadillac Championship, Rory McIlroy could at least console himself with his elevation to second place in both the Official World Golf Ranking and The European Tour’s Career Money List.
McIlroy had led by three shots after three rounds at Trump National Doral, but was overtaken on a blustery final day by Australian Adam Scott, who moved to sixth in the World Ranking after claiming his second WGC title.
That is four places below McIlroy, whose tied third finish alongside Danny Willett in Miami ensured the Northern Irishman would leapfrog Scott’s compatriot Jason Day to become Jordan Spieth’s closest rival in the battle for world supremacy.
The €436,393 McIlroy earned also took his career earnings to €28,865,227, and he is now €435,800 ahead of third-placed Ernie Els. England’s Lee Westwood still leads the way on €31,359,189.
