Rory McIlroy has overtaken Lee Westwood as the European Tour’s all-time career money list after a tied second finish at The 147thOpen Championship.
The four-time Major Championship winner’s final round 70 at Carnoustie Golf Links was ultimately two shots shy of eventual Champion Golfer of the Year Francesco Molinari but earnt the Northern Irishman a share of second place alongside Justin Rose, Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele.
With McIlroy ending the week at six under and Westwood in a tie for 61st place at plus six, the 29 year old tops the European Tour’s all-time career money list at €35,110,780, with Westwood now in second position at €34,777,910.
The former World Number One is a 13-time European Tour winner, including Race to Dubai victories in 2012, 2014 and 2015, with 82 top-ten finishes to his name and four Major Championships – the 2011 US Open, the 2012 and 2014 US PGAs and the 2014 Open Championship.
Westwood surpassed €25million in career earnings in 2011 following his 29thplace finish at the Dubai World Championship to overtake South African Ernie Els as the leader on the European Tour's career money list. The Englishman has won 23 times on the European Tour, featuring 137 top-tens, an Order of Merit victory in 2000 and a Race to Dubai title in 2009.
Els, a 28-time winner on the European Tour, currently sits in third position at €28,623,680 with 2017 Masters Tournament Champion Sergio Garcia hot on his heels at €28,051,005, and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson rounding out the top five at €27,952,674.
Molinari, who claimed the Claret Jug yesterday in Carnoustie and became the first Italian to win a Major, is currently 13th on the career money list with earnings of €20,759,773.
