Montgomerie Seeks Fourth Volvo Scandinavian Masters Title

Colin Montgomerie will attempt to add another entry to his already impressive golfing CV this week when he defends his title in the Volvo Scandinavian Masters at Kungsängen Golf Club to the north west of Stockholm.

The 39 year old Scot booked his place in the record books 12 months ago at Barsebäck, when he became the first person in the history of the event to win three times, a 14 under par total of 274 good enough to see off the English duo of Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood by a shot.

Montgomerie's second Volvo Scandinavian Masters win also came at Barsebäck in 1999 while his first success came in the inaugural tournament at Drottningholm in 1991. The Ryder Cup player will be keen to add another Swedish venue to his list of triumphs while, at the same time, improving on his own personal record at Kungsängen which saw him finish tied 17th in 2000 and tied 16th in 1998.

As always, for one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the season, there is a strong field assembled in Scandinavia, not least from the host country who will be hopeful of following in the footsteps of Jesper Parnevik, the last home winner at Kungsängen in 1998 and who returns to European Tour action this week.

Already there have been three Swedish winners on The 2002 European Tour International Schedule, Richard S Johnson (ANZ Championship), Carl Pettersson (Algarve Open de Portugal), and Jarmo Sandelin (BMW Asian Open) and Pettersson and Sandelin will tee up at Kungsängen.

Other home players looking to impress will be Niclas Fasth and Pierre Fulke, who will both make their Ryder Cup debuts alongside Parnevik at The De Vere Belfry in September, and the 1997 Volvo Scandinavian Masters Champion Joakim Haeggman.
