Geoff Ogilvy moved into prime position to end Tiger Woods’s winning run by establishing a five shot lead over the World Number One, and a four stroke advantage over his nearest challengers at the WGC – CA Championship.
The Australian returned to the Doral Golf Resort and Spa to conclude the weather delayed third round with a four under par 68 to move to 16 under par for the week – four strokes clear of The European Tour quartet of Retief Goosen, Adam Scott, Vijay Singh and Graeme Storm, who joined America’s Jim Furyk on 12 under 204.
While Scott put the finishing touches to a highly creditable third round 69 on Sunday morning, Furyk and Goosen roared into contention with a superb pair of 64s, only to be outdone by Singh and Storm, whose respective 63s were the lowest scores of the week, conjured, in the main, amidst the most trying conditions of the tournament.
Woods is by no means out of the tournament on 11 under, alongside the BMW PGA Championship holder Anders Hansen, but he will have to improve upon his third round 72 if he wants to bring his number of consecutive victories to eight.
