Oriol and Besseling move into contention as first round resumes

Pedro Oriol and Wil Besseling jumped into contention when the first round of the weather-affected Open de Portugal at Morgado Golf Resort resumed on Friday morning.

Play was suspended on Thursday due to thunder and lightning, with the afternoon starters still to complete their opening rounds.

Englishman Matt Wallace had set a daunting clubhouse target with a bogey-free 63 on day one, while Sebastian Heisele was a shot further back on nine under par after his 64.

When play got back under way at 8.30am on Friday, Oriol, starting at the tenth tee, fired six birdies on his front nine to climb up the leaderboard.

The Spaniard dropped his first shot of the day at the third but bounced back with another gain at the sixth to get to six under par with three holes remaining.

Dutchman Besseling also began his first round at the tenth tee and made a strong start, notching a birdie at his first hole before picking up further shots at the 14th and 17th to reach the turn in 34.

Besseling then made back-to-back gains at the first and second before firing another birdie at the sixth to move to six under and grab a share of third place with three holes left to play.

The second round will begin at 11.30am local time.
