Player Blog: Ernie Els

The four-time Major winner from South Africa is the latest star to pen a blog from the tour as he plays the Porsche European Open for the first time since 1994.

I’m happy to be back, especially in Germany
. Obviously coming in here on a Wednesday means you’re a bit out of whack, but I think everybody’s in the same boat, because nobody could play a practice round or the Pro-Am.

I wanted to spend a bit of time with the family recently so that’s why I haven’t played much. It’s my daughter’s last year at school and I wanted to spend a bit more time with her this year. She’s going to college next year, so it’s an important year for her.

I wanted to be there for her and go to some colleges that she’s looking to go to in the States. I did a couple of road trips with her too which was wonderful. So there was a lot of quality time with her, because before you know it they’re out of the house.

I’m excited to play this week.I haven’t played in the European Open since 1994 and I think it was played on East Sussex National. It’s nice to be back and it’s nice to see the tournament back and with a great sponsor like Porsche.

I’m pretty relaxed about this week. I’ve had a month off and I’m in the process of doing a couple of things that I did with my swing back in my 20s, but I want to have a good week too. I want to enjoy the golf course and the people. If I have a really good week, then great. I’m just pleased to be here though.

A lot of the fans here go to South Africa.
German people love South Africa, so I’ve got a nice relationship with the German public. Being around for such a long time, people know me!

I love watching The Ryder Cup, just the spectacle of it.The guys really flourish and you see some of the best golf shots you’ll ever see, better than at Majors. It’s just wonderful golf and I love watching it.

Obviously the Americans have gone a different route this time, so that shows you how serious they are about trying to get it back. It’s anybody’s game next week I think.
