Popert bidding for G4D Tour double next week in Hamburg

Kipp Popert will bid for back-to-back victories as the G4D Tour returns to action next week in Hamburg.

The Englishman is one of ten competitors taking part in G4D @ Porsche European Open, as some of the world’s best golfers with a disability tackle the formidable Porsche Nord Course at Green Eagle Golf Course in Germany.

Taking place from May 30-31, the field will once again take on the same course setup as the DP World Tour professionals.

Popert won the inaugural G4D Tour event, G4D @ Betfred British Masters, as he defeated Canadian Kurtis Barkley and America’s Chris Biggins in a play-off at The Belfry. He recently became the first golfer in history to place on both the WR4GD (World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability) and World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) after finishing in a share of 12th at the Irish Men’s Amateur at The Island Golf Club near Dublin.

“I’m really looking forward to G4D @ Porsche European Open,” said Popert. “It’s an event I’ve watched on TV for years and it’ll be my first time competing in Germany. I’m really excited for the challenge and hopefully it will be a good week.”

Also teeing it up in Hamburg is Brendan Lawlor, the current Number One on the WR4GD, Belfry runner-up Barkley, Spaniard Juan Postigo, Italy’s Tommaso Perrino, Fredrik Fjaeraa of Norway, Englishman Mike Brown and Daphne van Houten from the Netherlands.

Making their first appearances on the 2022 G4D Tour in Hamburg are Belgium’s Adem Wahbi and Petri Takkunen from Finland.

Wahbi is no stranger to the big stage, having competed on the European Challenge Tour in 2019 and also participated in an exhibition match at the Belgian Knockout that year. Wahbi was one of the eight competitors at last year’s EDGA Dubai Finale, which took place at Jumeirah Golf Estates the same week as the DP World Tour Championship.

“I’m so happy and motivated to have the chance to play on the same course as the DP World Tour pros in G4D @ Porsche European Open,” said Wahbi. “I was really disappointed after my performance in the last event of 2021 in Dubai, and it was really hard to come back mentally.

“But I have worked hard and a friend of mine told me recently, I have to believe that I was born ready.”

G4D @ Porsche European Open is the second of seven events taking place on the G4D Tour in 2022, with live scoring available on the DP World Tour’s website. The remaining events this year will be held in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Spain and Dubai.
