Popert wins sixth G4D Tour title as he successfully defends at the Belfry

Kipp Popert underlined his status as the World Number One by successfully defending his title with an emphatic seven-shot victory at the G4D Tour @ Betfred British Masters.

The Englishman, who held a two-shot overnight lead, carded a two-under 70 for the second day running over the iconic Brabazon Course at the Belfry to claim his second victory of the campaign.

Popert, who won the season-opener at the Australian All Abilities Championship @ the ISPS HANDA Australian Open, had finished second in his last three starts but made sure there was no repeat outcome as he won his sixth G4D Tour trophy.

Kurtis Barkley came into the final day as his nearest challenger but carded a 75 to finish alongside G4D Open winner Brendan Lawlor in a share of second place at three over, with Tommaso Perrino a shot further back.

"It hasn't really sunk in just yet," said Popert, who went to the University of Birmingham and had lectures at the Belfry.

"To go back to back is awesome. It is awesome to do it here at the Belfry.

"Big thanks to my caddie Ben because he also went to University with me and he really helped me out there."

Popert, playing alongside Canada’s Barkley, made back-to-back birdies to open the day, before he cancelled out a bogey at the fifth with a bounceback birdie at the sixth before a bogey at the ninth saw him turn in 35.

After playing the first five holes of his back nine in level par, a pair of birdies at the 15th and 17th saw him reach five under for the week before he dropped a shot at the last to finish at two under.

Barkley also began with a birdie at the first but his hopes of a maiden G4D Tour title were all but ended with back-to-back bogeys at the third and fourth, and he mixed one birdie with three bogeys over the rest of his round.

Lawlor closed out his campaign with a 71, which included a run of three birdies in a six-hole stretch from the second before a double-bogey six at the 18th saw him miss out on finishing solo second.

Perrino was just one of three players to be level par of better for the final day as he parred the first 12 holes before mixing one birdie with a bogey over the closing stretch.
