Jim Payne closed a six stroke-gap on the leaders with two final day 67s to realise his dream of resurrecting a career threatened by back injury. Rain deays meant the final two rounds being played on one day and Payne's two 67s set a target of nine under par which several people bettered sometimes during the last afternoon, but not by the final reckoning. Patrik Sjoland, Lee Westwood, Eduardo Romero and Miguel Angel Jimenez all challenged, but met with trouble playing the back nine. Payne's first 67 moved him from 22nd into a share of sixth place, and his next round with seven birdies and three bogeys set the clubhouse lead and took him to eventual victory.
