Paul McGinley became the 11th first-time winner of the 1996 season. He packed 11 birdies - one outside the European Tour record - in a closing 62 - one outside the course record - to sweep from eight behind. Paul finished with a 15-foot birdie putt at the 16th, a 25-foot par-saver at the 17th and a drive followed by a 100-yards sand-wedge second to three feet for an 18th hole birdie to deny Juan Carlos Pinero, who led by three with one round to go, and David Lynn, who birdied three of the last five in only his third tour event.
