Ernie Els became only the fourth player to win successive World Match Play titles when he overcame Steve Elkington in the final by 3 and 1 at Wentworth Club. Els won his second round match against Lee Janzen and then overcame Bernhard Langer in the semi-finals. In the final, he went into lunch two up and then won the second (19th) and third (20th) in the afternoon before Elkington took three of the next four holes. Els regained a two hole advantage at the eighth (26th) which he sustained as the next eight holes were halved. A two iron second shot to within 15 feet at the 17th (35th) saw the trophy back in the South African's grasp.
