Raymond Russell graduated from Apollo Week student to European Tour winner in only his tenth event by finishing birdie-birdie at Royal Mougins to overcome David Carter. Both players were tied on 12 under afer 54 holes, and both had mixed final rounds to reach the 17th at ten under par. Then Russell hit superb approaches to five and ten feet at the 17th and 18th respectively to wriggle ahead of Carter with two birdies. Ignacio Garido, Gordon Brand Jnr, Costantino Rocca and rookie Padraig Harrington all threatened, but Russell prevailed after his classic down-the-stretch duel with Carter.
