Ernie Els made history when he became the first winner of a 72-hole strokeplay tournament co-sanctioned by the South African PGA and the PGA European Tour. One off the pace after 54 holes, Els moved infront at the seventh and began the inward half with a two shot advantage. Mark McNulty threatened with three successive birdies, but both he and Tony Johnstone lost their chances with bogeys. Els secured victory with a 25 foot putt that had about two feet of break on it for a birdie at the 17th.
