Mike Weir has withdrawn from the Cisco World Match Play and his place has been taken by Sam Torrance.
Weir, the Canadian left-hander who won the 2000 WGC American Express Championship, withdrew from the competition this morning, telling organisers that he would not be making the trip over to the UK.
Torrance, who faced disappointment as the 2001 European Ryder Cup Captain, received the call for the Cisco World Match Play over breakfast and was extremely happy to accept.
'It's a wonderful opportunity for me' he said. 'I am not saying this just because I've been included, but I think this is one of the best tournaments in the world'.
Torrance has played in this event three times before but has never taken the title. On Thursday he will tee off at 0945 against Seve Ballesteros who is 36 places behind him in the current Order of Merit.
