Henrik Stenson will take a one shot lead into the third round of the BMW Asian Open at the Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club. The Swede was one of 37 players who had to return to complete their second rounds on Saturday morning after the threat of lightning brought an early end to play on Friday night.
Stenson, winner of The CommercialBank Qatar Masters already this year on The European Tour International Schedule, was faced with a ten foot putt for birdie on the 18th green when he returned, but although his stroke was good, the ball slid past the hole leaving the 30 year old with a tap in for a par five.
It gave Stenson a second round level par 72 and a five under par total of 139, one shot clear of Scotland’s Paul Lawrie, although the winner of The 1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie had the luxury of a long lie in his bed after having completed his second consecutive 70 on Friday before the storms arrived.
Four players share third place on three under par 141, Ireland’s Peter Lawrie, Portugal’s José-Filipe Lima, Danny Chia of Malaysia and Frankie Minoza of the Phillipines. In common with Paul Lawrie, all completed their second rounds on Friday night.
The cut fell at three over par 147 with 73 players remaining to contest the final two rounds. The third round, in three balls, will begin at 10.30am local time.
